Technical Bulletin – Have you got confidence in your twistlocks?

Port Engineering Services (PES) we’re instructed by a world leading OEM to undertake a test to destruction of a specifically designed set of ISO twistlocks. The test was undertaken utilising specialist machinery and controlled by a highly skilled PES engineer to replicate tensile strength and pulling forces. We reproduced the forces and energy impact of which the twistlocks are subjected to during normal cargo handling operations to determine the strength and break failure point in the twistlock.

The safe working load of twistlocks tested was SWL15T with a proof load test of 2xSWL. Our client objectives of this specialist test were to understand the brake failure point, the amount of elongation and a graphical illustration of the exact yield point. PES conducted the test to destruction using specialist equipment in which the test was carried out successfully on several examples.

Click here to view the video that demonstrates the twistlock being tested to destruction

The destruction test confirms PES’s original calculations that the break failure point of the twistlocks was recorded at 162T. PES provided a very detailed report with electronic data and graphs which exceeded the requirements and objectives of our client in terms of the detail we supplied.

The electronic data and graphs took during the investigation, measured readings throughout the test with several readings per second to help demonstrate a yield curve to show the exact break point and immediate drop off of load applied after failure. The initial calculation and test composed and confirmed that the twistlocks designed with a SWL 15T had a limiting Factor Of Safety (FOS) of 10:1

PES offer a wide range of consultation services to our clients worldwide, ranging from twistlocks, sheaves, shafts and more.

Technical Bulletin – Twistlocks

Port Engineering Services design, manufacture, load test and supply all ranges of bespoke and standard twistlocks which are all manufactured from our own upset forging dies.

Our blend of modified structural steel materials are forged to produce a “RAW” billet which are stocked in-house. When a client provides an order for twistlocks, we manufacture these, then load test the twistlocks required, providing a service to supply within 7 to 10 days.

Our forged billets are manufactured from our secret blend of materials which is developed to be above the British Standard requirements, which improves quality, strength and durability. Advancing your operations and providing you peace of mind.

By utilising our in-house fatigue and linear stress analysis programs, we design and test by simulation the life cycle expectancy of the twistlocks designed and determine when and where failure is likely to occur throughout the twistlocks life cycle. However, this simulation cannot be utilised for damage or isolated instances as this would be beyond our control when the twistlocks are in operation.

All of our twistlocks are manufactured with a matching nut individual to each lock. Once the locks and purpose threaded nuts are complete and load tested, each lock and nut will be match stamped to ensure all components remain as pairs to each other throughout the manufacturing and fitting service.

By manufacturing the threads as matched threads, this then reduces the risk of fretting during loading and shock loading scenarios and operation. Fretting can often result in premature failure of your twistlocks.

Each of the nuts are also manufactured from the same materials, so that the risks associated with the use of dissimilar materials is eradicated. This again improves quality and reassurance in using our twistlocks.

Technical Bulletin – Cracked Rail

Many of our clients have some form of equipment, crane or automated machinery most often been driven and travelling along rails.

Our clients realise and appreciate that every inspection we undertake on the equipment being used, that we inspect not only the machine but also the rail as required under Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and the range of BS 7121 standards.

It is as equally important to ensure that the stability of the asset is true running and free from defect as undetected cracks in your rails can pose serious consequences to your equipment.

We regularly apply our knowledge and competence in the inspection of rails and regularly conduct laser alignment and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) of your rails and in particular rail joints.

We recently conducted a rail inspection including laser alignment and NDT of the rail joints and on initial inspection the rail joints appeared to be defect free. After conducting an ultrasonic inspection and then confirming the results with further Magnetic Particle Inspections (MPI), we found cracks very visible and propagating from the foot of the rail.

Please see our photographs below of the sample we took from the defect rail to demonstrate the extent of cracks that were NOT visible to the naked eye!

Be safe and always regularly have your rails checked!
